ASTM International has released a standard practice for resonance testing. Published in 2023, the standard outlines the process for using the Impulse Excitation Method for detecting defects in metallic and non-metallic parts. NDT-RAM from The Modal Shop
simplifies the implementation of this method for manufacturers, and solutions range from small, manual testing systems to automated industrial systems designed to be incorporated into a production line.
This method of Non-Destructive Testing, sometimes referred to as the Resonant Acoustic Method, involves impacting a part and comparing its resonance spectra with the known resonance spectra from a reference group of similar parts with no defects. The practice utilizes mechanical means to excite a part and measure, record, and analyze whole-body resonance frequencies. It defines a method to determine the “acceptance criteria” for this impulse testing. The result is a “pass/fail” determination for the part in question.
